Story

In August 2019 I plan to travel with a group of students and teachers from Salford University to Kumi in Uganda to help deliever the 'Develop with Dignity Program'.

To take part in this trip I need to fundraise travel money to get there. Across the year I plan to take part in lots of activities along with friends and family to try and raise enough to go and help the children of Uganda.

Here is some information about the program...

Helping Ugandan School Girls Reach Their Educational Potential

In the Teso region, Teams4U have been working in the Kumi, Bukedea and Ngora, Soroti, Katakwi, Serere and Palisa districts since 2006. Through this work T4U projects support 71,556 children in the Kumi village. Of these 10,500 are girls aged 12-16. Like any other schoolgirl, the expectation is that these girls should achieve their potential through educational achievement. However, menstruation is a major barrier to these girls education as they are not fortunate enough to have access to proper sanitary pads. As a result they do not attend school during their monthly cycles. That is 4-5 days of education missed every 28 days, more than a fortnight per school term, totaling a staggering 441,000 days for the districts schoolgirls! Furthermore a large percentage of these schoolgirls are sexually active – not by choice but rather determined by their life circumstances. These leaves them very vulnerable to sexually transmitted diseases and infections.

As a result, T4U is committed to see girls “Develop with Dignity”. We believe this can only be achieved if they are able to complete their education without unnecessary disruption whilst also being protected or treated for sexual health and other preventable diseases. What T4U do is:

o Health Screening and Support Services
o Sexual reproductive health.
o Puberty, Periods and Personal Hygiene
o Body image
o Encourage girls to remain in school
