Story
What are we doing?
We are a team of 4 final year medical students (Tamsin, Jemimah, Jasmine and Megan) who are raising money by jointly covering the distance of Nepal (547 miles) in 1 month. We aim to do this as fast as possible by cycling, running, swimming etc. working as a team to complete the mileage. We’re doing this on top of our usual commitments, placements, jobs, studying etc. so it’s going to be a massive challenge but hopefully lots of fun!
We are going to do this from 6th January once we arrive back refreshed from our Christmas break until 6th February and will be keeping you all updated as to how many miles we’re managing to cover in the week as well as if we were theoretically crossing Nepal where we would have reached!
I will also be doing bake sales, dog walking, babysitting etc to help fundraise even more!
So why are we doing this crazy challenge?
In May 2020 we are joining the Health Partnership Nepal (HPN) charity team as part of our elective at the end of medical school. HPN aims to provide and improve medical support to one of the poorest countries in the world.
The project involves delivering teaching and medical/surgical care. The teaching includes dental hygiene, first aid and surgical skills which we aim to teach both to local communities and medical students in a way which can be then passed on to others in a sustainable manner so education continues even when we’ve left. Patients are assessed in health camps in rural communities and those who would benefit from surgeries are taken to Kathmandu. Money raised helps pay for these surgeries to be performed.
The team travels to a rural region of Nepal and runs health clinics to identify patients who may need surgeries. For more information check out the charity’s website https://www.hpnepal.org
Any money we raise will be going directly to the charity. As students on the trip we are covering the costs of all of our own flights, accommodation etc. It would be incredibly kind of you to donate, and any amount would be extremely generously received.
