I've raised £5000 to help fund a homework club in Haringey

I'm swimming the Fix Splash for the homework club! Please sponsor me!!
The Pyramid Health and Social Care Association (PHASCA) homework club in Haringey has helped hundreds of 5-16 year olds by offering after school support with home work. I was a volunteer myself, and seeing the growth in attainment and confidence in many of the children I worked with was inspiring.
However, the economic downturn and cuts to social care funding mean that the club is in serious danger of being underfunded or cancelled. This would mean many young people losing out and not realising their full potential.
Why should we care?
There is a well established link between poverty and poor educational attainment, and unfortunately for the children of Haringey, it is the 4th most deprived borough in London. These children are disadvantaged from the start, growing up in a community battling family breakdown, mental health problems, debt, and unemployment among adults and young adults.
It is crucial that they are given as much support as possible.
£5,000 could fund:
- qualified teachers and assistants to work with a children
- a dedicated co-ordinator to ensure that the club is well publicised and visible to those who need it
- travel expenses and opportunities for volunteers to contribute to the homework club in many different capacities, so they can grow their skills, build confidence and be more employable (it worked for me!)
If we raise more, we could also fund an ESOL teacher to come and work with parents while their children are in the homework club. This would help build confidence, strengthen the community and break down barriers between communities (65.3% of the Haringey population are made up of non-white British Ethnic Groups).
Hopefully I've convinced you of the importance of this fantastic initiative - drop me a note if you want any further information and I'd be really happy to provide this.
