Weʼve raised £6,994 to provide financial support to women living in slums in Nairobi, Kenya during lockdown.

Funded on Wednesday, 3rd November 2021

    Story

Nairobi is back in lockdown as another wave of covid-19 hits. There is still no support from the government for daily wage earners. This means women living in the slums have no money to buy food or other necessities. Many are also experiencing covid infection.

I am fundraising to provide emergency financial support to those women who have been hardest hit by the financial impact of lockdown. Every £10 raised will provide a food voucher for one woman and her family. The money will be transferred directly to women identified by their community who most need it and provide a much needed lifeline for them at this time.

To learn more about these women's lives, watch this short film we made in Nairobi: Be your sisters' keeper

Thanks to everyone who has donated to my most recent appeal. We've raised £250 in the past few days! Im still urgently looking to raise a further £1250. Please do donate if you can! Our qualitative research during last lockdown found most women had reduced meals for themselves and their children to one per day and we know the situation is worse this time as covid is now rampant. We're stepping in where government and large donors are not. Your funds will provide some immediate relief to women during this crisis. Thanks for supporting!

This fundraiser is still live! We've just finished 47 in-depth interviews in Nairobi. Women told us they are down to one meal a day or one meal every other day for themselves and their families. They've reduced the amount of food at each meal too. There is a famine happening here! Please do continue to donate. We are going to use funds to bulk buy and distribute staples of cooking oil, rice and beans, prioritising women who have covid. Many thanks, Tara xx
