Story

Hello all!

I am honored to be part of Capital International’s 2024 volunteer team for the Huruma Orphanage. Come September, myself and 12 other volunteers will fly out to Tanzania to get hands on in improving the facilities for those at the orphanage and making a positive impact on the wider community.

I’m passionate about this opportunity, as I’ll be able to have a direct, practical influence at the orphanage and see the results firsthand. Seeing the impact that the volunteer team made last year has motivated me to want to make a meaningful contribution and give as much as I can to the community in Arusha.

The Huruma’s Children Trust is an orphanage that was set up in 2012 and is in Arusha, Tanzania. It is home to around 35 children aged between 4 and 17 years old. Most of these children have lost either one, or both parents to aids or other life-threatening illnesses. As such, many have been in the orphanage since they were babies as they have no family for support.

The orphanage not only provides the children with a safe place to live but looks to provide a basic education and vocational training to help them find work and integrate back into society when they are old enough to do so.

In 2022, Capital International Group raised £22,000.00 to purchase the freehold for the land and existing building’s that the orphanage is on to secure its future. Without this, the orphan’s living there were at risk of becoming homeless.

Now, Capital International want to continue improving the facilities at the orphanage to benefit the children. That’s why a volunteer team is returning to Arusha this year to expand on the good work the 2023 team has already completed. This includes:

Building a cow shed to provide shelter for the animals

Painting the buildings

Planting fruit trees and creating vegetable patches

Creating a designated clothes washing area with better drainage

Looking at setting up apprenticeship schemes for life after the orphanage

Purchasing materials from local businesses to support the wider community

All donations will help this year’s volunteer team make a positive impact on the lives of those at the orphanage and the wider community.

Thank you 🧡
