You may be familiar with the Santa Shoebox Project. If not, it is a project in South Africa which originated in Cape Town in 2006 where people got together to pack a certain list of items into a shoe box, wrapped it up and gave it to needy and vulnerable children for Christmas who would otherwise not receive anything over Christmas.

When you consider the humble list of items included in the box (a toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, washcloth, educational supplies, outfit of clothing, sweets and a toy) it's clear that you are contributing directly to children in need.

This project is very close to my heart, something which my mom used to do (before she passed away) and something I participated in when I still lived in South Africa. I was delighted to find out that they have come up with a solution for those living abroad who want to still participate – you can buy a "virtual shoebox" which is then packed (all at cost) by Pick 'n Pay (the SA version of Sainsburys) and distributed. It is only £20 (R350) for a shoebox, which includes the box (it's a proper plastic box so that the children can use it for storage), the contents, wrapping, transportation and distribution.

So this is in memory of my mom, and for all the incredible people back home who are making a difference.
