Team ISP Climb Everest
At 4.30pm on Friday 19th March, Phil, Scott, Mike, Joe, Tom, Aaran plus some wonder ISP students and parents are going to start running up and down a hill in the local community. As a team they will only stop once they have collectively climbed the height of Everest. By our calculations this is at least 150 uphill ascents and a distance of 180km.
Our Charity: Greater Action
As of end January 2021, there are some 178,710 refugees and asylum-seekers registered with UNHCR in Malaysia. Some 154,140 are from Myanmar, The remaining individuals are some 24,560 refugees and asylum-seekers from 50 countries fleeing war and persecution, including some 6,610 Pakistanis, 3,650 Yemenis, 3,250 Syrians 3,230 Somalis, 2,660 Afghans, 1,730 Sri Lankans, 1,210 Iraqis, 750 Palestinians, and others.
In Malaysia the lack of refugee recognition and the inability of refugees to work make them vulnerable to destitution and hunger. Since Malaysia has not signed the international convention of Geneva that protects refugees since 1951, they have no legal rights, no access to education, very limited access to healthcare and no freedom of movement.
Greater Action was created to improve the lives of all marginalised refugees and asylum-seekers by providing them with day-to-day solutions for a better living. From 2020, we are focusing on the Afghan and Rohingya children’s education and livelihood. We cover school fees for 90 children, provide food relief for 170 families, emergency medical care, maternity support and mental healthcare. We create sustainable jobs in tailoring, baking and cooking to help them become financially independent and take pride in their work. We are 100% charity! Our team members are all unpaid volunteers and we work closely with Hilla Learning Centre, with International School students and the dynamic expat community of Mont Kiara and Desa ParkCity.
