Weʼve raised £830 to support the Team Evolution Annual Fund

Funded on Saturday, 27th June 2020

    What is crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered nonprofit.

The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.

The Team Evolution Annual Fund is the fundraising initiative to which our entire team – current trainees, parents, staff, alumni, grandparents, ex-athletes, ex-parents and friends, plus many more – contribute to annually. The purpose of the Annual Fund is to raise finances to both directly improve the offerings of the Team Evolution programme for the long term benefit of current and future British skiers, and to support our trainee-chosen charities’ for the year.

Ski racing is hugely expensive, and ensuring that every athlete who passes through the programme learns the value of money, of the opportunities that they are given, and the parity with the rest of the world is something that we take very seriously. By better understanding our privileges and by showing support and compassion for those less fortunate, we are able to help guide trainees to better understand the real world, long before they are required to leave the programme. Taking part in fund-raising to help others through the Annual Fund is an important part of this learning process.

Ski racing is a sport restrictive by its financial requirements, and as a programme Team Evolution has always strived to keep the costs as manageable as possible. The Team Evolution Annual Fund, through its partnership with The Winter Sports Foundation, allows us to help allocate a limited amount of financial support and financial aid to select students who may not otherwise be able to attend certain camps.

The Team Evolution Annual Fund also helps to fill the “funding gap” between the training fees that athletes pay, to the real cost of running the year round Team Evolution programme and associated facilities. The money raised helps the programme run numerous team activities across Europe, including supporting UK grass roots clubs with educational programmes, professional development of athletes and staff, and the enhancement of training facilities in the UK and Austria .

Finally, and arguably most importantly, the Team Evolution Annual Fund allows us to each year support our trainee-chosen charities’, ensuring that trainees understand the importance of “giving back” to the wider community and how their small contributions can make a big difference to the lives of others.

Revenue is raised for the Team Evolution Annual fund through a variety of initiatives, from the legendary Team Evolution Forest Run to equipment sales, donations and special fund raising events.

The tradition of parental support of the Team Evolution Annual Fund reflects a commitment to the programmes mission statement and values that we are immensely proud of. We only ask each family to participate in the way in which they are comfortable. Throughout the year families are kept informed of any particular fundraisers or initiatives, and any contribution, whether large or small, is deeply appreciated and is critical to our success in other fund-raising areas.

Every season the athletes at Team Evolution pick a charity to support through fund raising efforts and from the Team Evolution Forest Run, but following on from the world-wide disruption and loss caused but the COVID-19 outbreak, and that last year's charity was not fully supported as a result, for the 2020/21 season the athletes have decided to support two good causes.

This year they have decided as a team to donate and support the NHS Together Charity, and continue to support the South African Winter Ski Academy, based in the small ski resort of Tiffindell, in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa.

It goes without saying that all the trainees have recognised the wonderful support and work that the heroes within the NHS do day in, day out. The NHS Together Charities is a Charity that pools together donations and ensures that support is given to NHS staff in a variety of areas, from psychological and mental stress support through to childcare or financial aid. It is crucial we support our NHS who support our communities, and we are happy to have them as one of our chosen charities for the year.

The South African Ski Academy is a non-profit organisation which aims to provide a life changing opportunity to disadvantaged children in the "local" (around 400 miles!) area. It gives them the chance to gain an education, learn english, study and learn to ski over the course of a South African ski season, from June - September. If it weren’t for this scheme, the children in question would be working on the streets or on farmland and would not receive an education, and in some cases would never have seen the snow. This scheme presents the children with endless opportunities, including making new friends, gaining employment at the ski resort or even uncovering a hidden talent and traveling to international competition.

Our FIS team crossed paths with this organisation back in the summer of 2019 when they attended a 10 day slalom camp, which was highly successful. We had never been to South Africa before and did not know what to expect, but were really amazed with the slopes and more importantly, the kind of people we met who were so warm and welcoming.

The children selected for this scheme are usually from poor families in the local area, with many living in shacks or huts made from recycled material. The average family in the Eastern Cape area earns around $10 a day, with the daily wage for most children less than $3 per day. Most families are employed to work on farms and the land and have never seen snow before. Without the South Africa Winter Ski Academy, these children would simply not get the chance to discover the sport we all love, enjoy and often take for granted.

The government provides grants for the South African Winter Sports Academy to take children onto the scheme and provide them with housing, an education, qualifications in snow sports and allows them to train as skiers. This costs around $1000 per child for the 3 months that they attend the South African Winter Ski Academy. If they are successful, they can return year after year and become qualified as ski instructors, or even qualify for high school in Johannesburg. Put simply, it is a life changing opportunity for many of the children involved.

We would love to raise enough money to help more children participate in this amazing scheme, and will be doing our best to fund raise over the coming months in order to help those less fortunate than us. We will also be collecting together any of our old equipment to send over there for the children to learn to ski with - so if you want to donate any old equipment please email

If you have any questions about the South African Winter Ski Academy scheme, the NHS Together Charity, the Team Evolution Forest Run or Team Evolution Annual Fund, please get in touch.
