Story

Our beautiful boy Theodore 'Teddy' John Biggs was born on 18/09/23 but sadly passed at just 24 minutes old.

Teddy had been diagnosed with a Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia at our 20 week scan, this condition meant there was a hole in his diaphragm and caused his organs to rise and push against his lungs, preventing them from growing. His case was sadly severe putting his survival chances at only 15%. We opted for a FETO procedure which involved putting a tiny balloon in his Trachea which would then encourage his lungs to grow and increase his chances.

The procedure went well, and within 3 weeks his Lung to Head ratio had gone from 18% to 34%, things were starting to improve. The balloon would then need to be removed at 34 weeks.

However, sadly at 29+6 weeks, I went into labour and was too far along to be able to be transferred to Kings College Hospital where we were being treated, meaning Teddy would need to be born at our local hospital in Broomfield.

As I also had an infection, Teddy was born via Emergency C-Section as this was the safest way. Everyone involved with Teddy's care at Broomfield did everything they possibly could to save Teddy, however sadly there were just too many factors against him (the CDH, balloon obstruction, premature birth and infection). He really fought to be with us, but he had to let go.

What we never knew was possible was what happened next, we were moved to their Blossom Suite where we could spend as much time with Teddy as we wished. Cold cots were provided, they even had a nursery with so many items like premmie baby clothes, keepsakes, toys, books. There was just so much which we were amazed by. The room itself was also made as homely as it could be within a hospital.

We spent 5 days with Teddy in the Blossom Suite before we decided it was time to go home, having the Blossom Suite as part of it all helped the most horrible situation that little bit easier. It allowed us to make memories with Teddy, but also come away with keepsakes not only for us but for other members of our family to cherish. Having reached our initial target we have upped our target and will also be donating towards CDH UK who is the charity for Teddy's condition and supported us through Teddy's journey.

Teddy's funeral will be on Thursday 19th October, and rather than flowers we would love to be able to give back to the Blossom Suite. Therefore, we are asking for donations towards this so we can then purchase more keepsakes for future families in Teddy's name.

Thank you.
