Story
I was living in Argentina when I found out I was pregnant - it took my boyfriend Pablo and I completely by surprise but we couldn’t have been happier.
The 3 month scan came around and we were back in England - everything was perfectly normal and our baby looked happy and healthy. Now we just had to wait for the 5 month scan - it felt like forever!
On the morning of Monday the 12 of June we went to the hospital and looked at the monitor with great anticipation but the nurse was quiet and stopped the scan after about a minute. All our hopes, dreams and plans came to an end as she told us that she couldn’t find a heartbeat. I was distraught.
We were immediately taken to The Quiet Little Room on the labour ward and told that I’d need to come back the next day to be induced so that I would go into labour. The following 24 hours were full of constant crying, sadness and dread - we had no idea what we were supposed to be doing with ourselves.
We were taken back to the Quiet Little Room in the labour ward - this room had been built especially for families in the same situation as us when the need for privacy and comfort is so important. It had been paid for by an amazing family who had fundraised over £17,000 following the loss of their baby a few years ago.
Labour lasted for about 12 hours and our tiny little girl was born on 14 June - she weighed only 170 grams. She was the most beautiful baby and we were lucky enough to spend as much time as we wanted with her in the safety of The Quiet Little Room, supported by a specially trained bereavement midwife.
These days were the hardest we’ve ever endured and truly, it would've been a million times worse if we hadn’t been lucky enough to be surrounded by the amazing staff at Lewisham Hospital - they made sure that we knew that Ariel’s life, as short as it was, wouldn't go unnoticed.
We’d like to try and give something back by raising money for resources for The Quiet Little Room.
