Story

The 2021 North Ronaldsay Sheep Festival is a unique event - a festival with a core aim of repairing a Grade A listed structure: a dry stone wall called "The Sheep Dyke". The dyke runs for 12 miles around our little island and serves to keep the native sheep on the shore where they thrive on a diet rich in seaweed. The genetic purity of the sheep is protected by isolating them from the other breeds of sheep on the island.

The Festival is run by a volunteer committee and most of the events are free. Although it promotes dyke building, our festival programme is stuffed with attractions likes dances, walks, lighthouse tour, talks, music and traditional arts and crafts.

The fundraising activity will be a series of 18 circular walks covering all the NR coastline to be undertaken by Alex and anyone else who would like to join her. The walks will be mapped and photographed then posted to our Facebook page.

Please note, this fundraiser was set up last year. Alex and Eileen had planned to walk around the island in one go, however, due to Covid and Alex's shin splints, we've had to change the challenge.
