Story

BACKGROUND

The Art of Boxing is a small training studio run by local undefeated professional boxer, Robin Dupre and boxing enthusiast, Alex Taylor. In mid 2016, Robin decided to run a free class for kids aged between 8-12 years in the local community in an attempt to offer something back from what boxing has provided him during his time in the sport. His intended purpose for the class was to teach the kids some discipline and help to build their confidence as well as giving them something to focus on and get them active.

Every 12 week programme finishes with a final presentation and sparring demonstration in front of family and friends, usually with special guests in attendance. Prominent community figures have included Shaun Bailey and Keith Prince, who were members of the London Assembly at the time, local firemen, and Gary Hutton who is co founder of local charity Product of a Postcode. They attend the events to watch the kids spar, alongside their parents, and to deliver a talk about the important life lessons inside and outside of the ring.

WHAT ARE WE DOING?

Last year, Alex and a few other members from The Art of Boxing took on the challenge to walk or run 5km every day in May. This year we have committed to take on the challenge again, however this time have decided to do do it in aid of the children's programmes The Art of Boxing run. Well over 100 children have reaped the benefits of the free programme offered. Some have continued on with their boxing whilst others have used the skills and confidence to progress in other areas of their life. The proceeds from the last campaign in early 2017 funded programmes and presentations for four groups of youngsters for the entire year.

WHY ARE WE FUNDRAISING?

Our 5km a day for May challengers are raising money to assist in the running of these courses and to provide the children with the following to enable them to have a better boxing experience:

Final course presentation - following the positive response to the initial presentation, we would like to continue this for all future courses (certificate, trophy, t-shirt and refreshments for guests)

Promotion - to raise awareness of the courses to more families in the community and encourage them to become involved

HOW CAN I GET UPDATES?

To show how our challengers are getting on, join our group on Facebook (The Art of Boxing 5km a day for May) where they will be posting daily snaps of the walk or run they have completed.

HOW CAN I HELP?

We would love it if you could support our members and friends who are taking the time in May to walk 5km every day; its quite the challenge. No amount of money is too small! If you would like to participate in the challenge, join our group on Facebook - The Art of Boxing 5km a day for May.
