Theatre @41 Monkgate is a thriving theatre space in the heart of York. Formerly known by several names including Upstage Centre and Stage Coach Youth Theatre, it was opened by the late John Cooper who not only bought the building and created a local community theatre, he used the building as a rehearsal space and a place where young people could get involved in Stagecoach among other ventures.
More recently, the building is a vibrant hub of the arts in York. From housing York Stage School (training in the arts for young members of the York community) to being the home of Once Seen Theatre, a fantastic performance group made up of York residents with learning difficulties. The theatre has also become the venue of choice for Pick Me Up Theatre, a company who create new and exciting pieces of theatre and we collaborate with both York St John University and the University of York plus a vast array of local community and professional theatre groups.
Unfortunately, our venue is now under threat from an unstoppable force; Mother Nature. Over the years, our roof has begun to deteriorate and we just do not have the funds necessary to mend it. We have had a surveyor come to look at the roof after a harsh winter and the estimated costs to repair it are much greater than the resources we have available currently. So Theatre@41 Monkgate needs you! We are hosting several fundraising events throughout the year and seeking help wherever we can find it. We would be very grateful if you could spare donations of any size to go towards fixing our roof and helping to ensure Theatre@41 can continue to be an artistic home for all the residents of York.
