Story

At the Bronx, we like to think of ourselves as an extended family, for any child that walks through our doors. We want all the children to feel like they can come and talk to any one of us, whether they wish to discuss boxing or things going on in their personal life. We have a great network of support within the gym and great role models for the children to look up to.

The Bronx boxing gym has a number of very talented young boxers from the local area and further afield. The coaches all do a fantastic job, working closely with each child to build a close but professional bond. The Bronx Boxing Gym is a non-profit, non-funded organization solely run by a committee of volunteers. All our coaches work on a volunteer basis even though they all have full time businesses of their own to run! Our coaches are so passionate about what they do; they pay money from their own pockets towards the rent to ensure our kids still have a place to train!

We also offer limited spaces to children whose parents are in financial difficulties and have spare gloves; boots etc. for kids who cannot afford to buy them, but show great potential in the sport.

Every year we have a list of great achievements but this year #TEAM BRONX wants 2018 to be the year that The Bronx Boxing Gym makes its mark and continues to make improvements year after year. We are currently looking into new premises and also registering as a community interest company to secure future funding. This process may take a long time so in the meantime we are appealing to the local community and local businesses for help with our fundraising campaign. We are already well under way with fundraising events being planned. We have bag packing in place at B&M fort Kinnaird, Iceland, Musselburgh and Tesco, North Berwick! We plan to have a sponsored local area clean up, an open/fun day in April, race night in May, tough-mudder in June and hope to have some involvement with Tranent gala for civic week. We have also teamed up with Davie Martin from Radio Saltire, who has been a great help and offered lots of great advice! The money we hope to raise will be used for a number of things such as entering our kids into local competitions, entering competitions abroad and buying new equipment when needed. We also plan on hosting a boxing show for people to enjoy a great night of boxing with our kids, showing off their talents!

This year, so far, Alexander Stewart set the bar in January by winning gold at the eastern districts. We have 3 boxers competing in the school & youth championships at the end of February all hoping to bring home gold’s! Then young John McCallum will be competing in the elite & youth championships beginning of March. Our heavyweight boxer, Mitchell Barton, has been selected to represent Scotland in these years’ commonwealth games, which we are all very much looking forward to! We have a fantastic opportunity to go to New York in September and train with world class coaches at the world famous Gleason’s gym! This is a great opportunity for our boxers to gain experience and develop their skills. They will also be competing in Inter-club competitions whilst in New York!

We are hoping to get a local business on board to sponsor our team training kit for the next year. This would be worn at all competitions, outings, media coverage and would give the business great advertisement opportunities! If you or someone you know may be interested in sponsoring our team kit, please get in touch with our club secretary, Michelle Rendell, michellemclay@hotmail.co.uk to discuss further details.

Any help and support with donations and sponsorship would be gratefully appreciated. Or if you would like a tour of our Gym, please contact us to discuss.
