    Story

    1. Who are we?

Supported by Delfont Mackintosh Theatres, The Caedmon Company aims to transform the lives of those who have been deeply affected by Adverse Childhood Experiences* by helping them turn a passion for the performing arts into a skill that could transform their lives.

*“ACEs” can include physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, neglect, house hold dysfunction, parental divorce, caregiver mental illness, and household violence.

    2. How is this achieved?

Working with children and young people interested in the performing arts, our Hero's Journey writing programme develops the first flicker of a passion into a talent that could transform their lives.

Historically, the ‘hero’s journey’ is a universal template of stories used by many different cultures and faiths around the world. No matter who tells the story, it will always involve a hero who goes on a quest, is victorious in a decisive crisis and comes home changed or transformed.

Caedmon has used that template to create The Hero’s Journey Programme - a creative writing and performance arts programme for children and young people that as well teaches new personal and interpersonal skills which improve mental wellbeing. These skills are:

    • Cultivating positive and healthy relationships

    • Safety and trust in themselves and others

    • Personal growth and achievement

    • Recognising their achievements

    • Self-belief

    • Resilience

    3. How does it work?

Caedmon has created two programmes that will run alongside each and coincide with the academic school year.

The 6 - week programme is designed for specialist services that work with children and young people who have experienced adverse childhood experiences. This programme will be delivered online for 1 young person at a time.

The 10 - week programme is designed for the education sector working with 4 pupils at a time from Pupil Referral Units across London and beyond. This will be delivered in person.

    4. Why work with such a small group?

The children and young people we work with have learning difficulties and complex emotional and mental health difficulties which demand far greater than usual educational support and care.

Overwhelmed by thoughts of low self-esteem, they struggle to stay focused when participating in educational activities that involve large groups of -people.

In having a more focussed and contained approach, they will feel safe and open to the idea of exploring their identities and unique experiences.

    5. Our Current Position:

The Caedmon Company is registered in England and Wales as a non-profit company limited by guarantee (No. 13349483).

We are currently raising funds that will:

    • Cover the costs of delivering 2 x 6-week programmes and 1 x 10- week programme starting from September 27th 2021 and finishing on December the 9th.

    • Contribute to the hiring of a comms/fundraising officer.

If you could contribute anything towards our costs we would be most grateful for your support.

I look forward to hearing from you.

    Very best wishes,

    Steven Hevey
