Story

Hello!

Thanks so much for visiting our fundraising page! We’re excited to be raising money for some incredible causes, and appreciate any support you can give.

What are we doing?

On the 1st of April, we’ll be setting off to climb Base Camp, Mount Everest. This is a 12-day trek through the Himalayas, where we’ll be hiking for 6-8 hours a day!

Who’s going?

Jules Smith, Marina Comninos, Jeremy Basset, Hugo Basset, Matt Smith, Alex Comninos, Cecile Espolin Johansen, Thomas Chang, Ryan Kerr, Marinette Hexeberg, Marius Linten

What are we raising funding for?

We're supporting three amazing causes:

- Puja Norsang Tamangs University Fund

- The Didi Movement Charitable Trust

- The Laxmi Support Foundation

All money raised will be split equally between these three causes. Thank you so much for your support!!

Puja Norsang Tamang’s University Fund

Puja is an extraordinary young girl, and the inspiration for why we decided to organise this trip. Since meeting in 2014, Puja and Jules have been in weekly communication, in a friendship that is now more like a sisterhood.

Puja, like many Nepalese girls, comes from an impoverished background and had a very difficult childhood. With no role models that had ever had any form of higher education, and a failing school system, her dreams of becoming a lawyer, and breaking out of the perpetual cycle of poverty, seemed unachievable.

With mentorship, guidance, and years of hard work, she just needed a little support to realise she is so powerful and capable of anything. After years of struggle, drive and pure determination, she is currently happily living in Brisbane, Australia, studying for her undergraduate degree in Community Studies, with the goal of completing a law conversion when finished.

None of this would have been possible without the unwavering support of our friends, family, and an entire Nepalese village who all put money together to help get her to Australia. Although she is thriving, she has to pay extortionate International University Fees, and even with all of our support, it is still a struggle.

Puja is a shining example of the limitless potential inherent in every individual to actualise their aspirations, given a helping hand. With only two years remaining in her undergraduate degree, any and all contributions will undoubtedly prove invaluable to her.

The Didi Movement

The Didi Movement is a charitable trust, set up with the goal to support young women (like Puja), gain access to support, mentorship and funding, for their education. Didi means ‘older sister’ in Nepalese, and we believe we can really make a difference in young women's lives, by not just supporting them in a financial manner, but through offering mentorship, whether for general life or for career guidance! Everyone could use an older sister to give them a helping hand, and this is why we are starting a movement!

We have been building the DIDI Movement over the last year, and are planning to get it registered with the charities commission of the UK! For everyone that has set up a charity, you’ll know this is a long and costly process. In the meantime, we’re working on building partnerships with schools, and local communities, and connecting to young women, to find the best route to create the most value for these young women!

As we build out the movement and get officially registered, we’d welcome any support as we will be hosting charity fundraising events to get the word out!

The Laxmi Support Foundation

https://laxmi-support.com/

"The Laxmi Support Foundation, founded in 2006, is a small but effective charity. Our aim is to support the educational and social development of children in Nepal. For over a decade, we've been supporting an orphanage and eight schools and have successfully finalised over 70 projects. We also provided relief to hundreds of families after the destructive earthquake in 2015 and during the Covid-19 crisis in 2020 and 2021. Our upcoming projects in 2023 will include a Health Camp in the hills of Nuwakot, sponsoring students coming from poor families and providing sports articles to several schools. We fully rely on donations from the public and our running costs are kept to the bare minimum. We greatly appreciate your help."

Their registration number for the Dutch Chamber of Commerce is 34255948.

Thank you so much for your support!
