My Story : A charity release in aid of Mental Health & Youth Music The fall of emperor less - featuring Lee Thompson & Gil Sharone I decided late winter 2017 to create a single release in aid of mental health and youth music.
Due to my on going battle with depression, I find being productive and having the freedom to express myself is not only a form of escapism but, it is also a positive creative outlet.
The charity release entitled ‘The Fall of Emperor Less’ is essentially about the fall of a higher power and a metaphor for overcoming the everyday struggles of mental health. The composition was not created in my usual style, however, the finished result in its alternative offbeat reggae form, definitely helped deliver the message with its strong lyrical content and overall powerful delivery and sense of unity.
To help raise the profile of the charity release, i decided it would be great opportunity to engage with idols of mine and It was an absolute privilege and honour to get to work closely with world renowned LA session drummer Gil Sharone (+44, Fishbone, Dillanger Escape Plan) and the famous overblown tenor growls of Lee Thompson (Madness, Lee Thompson’s Ska Orchestra) as well as trumpeter Steve White and trombonist Julian Rodic (Lee Thompson’s Ska Orchestra).
I also enlisted help and guidance from friends and colleagues here in the region, acts such as powerhouse vocalist Jen Cherene (Karma Heart, Alcatraz House Band) the woodwind section of progressive horror outfit Spooky Jeffersons Ideal Lunchbox, local Illustrator Dean Morley and the overwhelming generosity of Blast Recording Studios, all of which helped bring the composition to life.
The sense of camaraderie was paramount throughout the release and I was overwhelmed with the help I received from the region and from the special guests, I will always be forever grateful for everyone involved and who helped bring the composition from its raw home studio demo format to this fantastic single release for such a worthy cause.
Mental illness is a growing issue among all classes, races and ages, their is no escaping its grasp and it effects everyone in someway. My aim is to get people conversing and diminish the stigma which surrounds it, and of course to fundraise for fantastic organisations MIND, THE SAMARITANS and TONIC. (All proceeds will be going to charity)
We are Legions of the Free Kings and Queens of Kingston The Rebels of Victory we are the legions of a enslaved nation struggled for your freedom What’s wrong with you, may not be wrong with me But that don’t mean we view each other differently When all of us deserve to be Queens and Kings You hold us down, push us around, treat us like pawns, we’re your playthings You think me small, but I know I am more Self-entitled ruler, just like the one before Spineless Big Man, who picks on the weak Get on your knees as we rise up and defeat We are Legions of the Free Kings and Queens of Kingston The Rebels of Victory My minds all there, although it may not seem Yet I can see through all those lies and your schemes Death is our virtue when in life we sin Brothers in Arms, we venture, we win Bow down to you, the one who claims to set us free Watch us as we tear part your chains of authority No murals, paintings, statures of your prowess Your kingdom will end with the fall of Emperor Less It’s a song, of how we are united as one Since the Struggle has begun It’s a song, of our right and freedom to express And how we all have that someone who is our Emperor Less We are Legions of the Free Kings and Queens of Kingston The Rebels of Victory You wear your scars for all to see upon your skin Whilst I bury my scars somewhere deep within Your flaws and your trauma build a false sense of dishonour Pursuit of perfection is not my existence! Bow down to you the one who claims to set us free Watch us as we tear apart your chains of authority No matter how fragile, we bare our scars no less United as one in the fall of Emperor Less It’s a song, of how we are united as one Since the Struggle has begun lyrics by Cherene & King
