Story

The Gafur Foundation:

The Gafur Foundation has been created in loving memory of the late Mohammad Abdul Gafur Chowdhury who passed away 20 years ago. Being a man who was renowned for his generosity and passion for education, we, his children and grandchildren, would like to continue his legacy by putting our best efforts into giving back to our community. We are, therefore, requesting your support to help fund our first campaign ‘The Gafur Foundation Scholarship’ - a full scholarship put in place to help facilitate the education of low-income students from the villages surrounding Rowail, Mohammad Abdul Gafur’s birth and resting place.

We have identified 10 such students who classify as needful and low-income, and therefore since the funds will be allocated to them directly, without any interference through intermediaries, we believe this to be a zakat-eligible cause. We are also operating with a 100% donation policy such that all of the £5000 raised will be going towards their education. This means that for every £500 raised, one student will have 5 years of their education fully supported - a truly life-changing opportunity for these children.

We would like to kindly ask you to donate generously to our fund such that we can make the biggest difference possible for these students! More information about both Mohammad Abdul Gafur and the charity can be found below :)

More about Mohammad Abdul Gafur:

With our father and grandfather being the inspiration for this educational foundation, it seems most appropriate for us to tell you about his story and the legacy he left behind. Mohammad Abdul Gafur was renowned for his generosity and his assistance provided in assimilating Bengali immigrants into the UK. Having been the first to attend university in his district, Jagapnathpur, and having spent 10 years as headmaster of Phailgoan High School, he truly was a man who believed in the importance of education. This belief followed him to the UK having set up the Rowail Education and Welfare Association, who initially built secondary schools in Bangladesh which have been since been adopted by the BD government and remain to be reputable educational establishments. Mohammad Abdul Gafur was also a face of hope to many; he assisted hundreds of illiterate Bengali immigrants process various applications to the British authorities which, in turn, helped them settle in the UK. He also set up the Wapping Bengali & Islamic Association and held the role of chairman from its inception to just before his death.

Inspired by his story, it is fitting that the charity that bears his name, set up by his children and grandchildren, is one whose aims and objectives are for the ‘advancement of education, particularly for the needy and orphans’ . The charity will operate both in the UK and Bangladesh with our primary focus being for those students who cannot go to school either due to financial or family circumstances.

More About the Charity:

The Gafur Foundation is currently in the process of being approved by the Charities Commission as a registered charity, and our website is also under-development. We did not want these ongoing processes delaying us in starting our first campaign and hence were keen to implement our mission of ‘advancing education, particularly for the needy and orphans’ as soon as possible.

If you would like further details about this campaign and about the aims and objectives of the Gafur Foundation, please do contact us personally or send us an email at: info@gafurfoundation.org
