Story

£800 and 800 donors

I am hoping to donate my kidney through the paired kidney scheme to enable my sister to receive a new kidney. When I first offered my kidney I was significantly overweight and was in very poor physical health. Having worked continuously with a personal trainer at BWell Gym in Gorleston since September I have lost nearly 3 stone and improved my own health. I still need to lose another 2 stone in order to be fit and well enough to undergo such a major operation.

Thousands of people in the UK are waiting for an organ transplant. Around three people die every day across the United Kingdom in need of a life-saving organ transplant.

Only 1 in 100 people across the UK die in circumstances where their organs can be considered for transplantation. This means every potential donor is of vital importance. If more people join the NHS Organ Donor Register and talk to their families and ask them to support their decision to be a donor, more lives will be saved, as more families will agree to support their loved one’s decision to donate. Talking to your next of kin is essential as 40% of potential donors are reversed by next-of-kin because they were unaware of their loved one's wishes prior to their death.

I would like to raise some money to support the amazing work of the Jack Pryor Unit at the NNUH whilst also raising awareness about organ donation and the impact it can have on so many lives so I propose to undertake a series of challenges.

I will........

Month 1 (May) - Cycle the equivalent of stages 1, 15 and 21 of the Tour de France (522 km)

Month 2 (June) - Run the equivalent of 7.5 marathons (200 miles)

Month 3 (July) - The Oxbridge Rigfit Combo: Row the equivalent of the Oxford Cambridge Boat Race twenty times (80 miles) and undertake HITTS circuits.

What I would like you to do.......

Either, donate some money, even £1, will make a huge difference. I have over 500 friends on facebook so if everyone just gave £1 I would be over half way towards my target.

Or, even more important than the money, register as a donor!

Deciding to donate your organs is a generous and worthwhile decision that can save lives. Please, please, please consider registering as a donor and if you decide to go ahead please donate 1p to this page so we can see how many people we have encouraged to sign up. The link to register is below and you can find out everything you need to about organ donation. Please make sure you find the time to talk to your family about your wishes so that your registration counts.
