    Story

    ABOUT THE MINERS

Most people have no idea THE MINERS COMMUNITY ARTS & MUSIC CENTRE was originally the THE MOSTON COLLIERY PIT WASH HOUSE where the COAL MINERS would scrub themselves clean after a shift down the pit digging for coal. Over time it became known as the MINERS CLUB because the pit men would meet there after work for a couple of pints and a game of cards.

After the Pit was closed down, houses were built for the pit crews and their families and it became known as THE MINERS ESTATE and the MINERS CLUB stayed open as a social club, staging cabaret nights and hosting family functions. But by the back end of the 1990’s it was boarded up and left to rot.

However, in 2010 local artist LOUIS BECKETT and his partner PAULA decided to bring THE MINERS back to life as a community centre and with the help of their family and a bunch of committed volunteers THE MINERS COMMUNITY ARTS & MUSIC CENTRE rose up like a Phoenix from the ashes of the old wash house.

A decade later Lou and Paula are still running THE MINERS and offering a bit more than a pint and a game of cards for the local community. There’s a Recording Studio and Rehearsal Space for local bands, An Art Gallery for local Artists to exhibit their work, An 80 Seater Small Cinema, An Internet Radio Station, A Cafe, A Charity Shop, A Large Function Room for Hire. A Volunteer Run Food Bank, School Holidays Dinner Project and Xmas Parties for the local kids.

    THE MINERS NEED CASH

Lou, Paula and all the Volunteers at the THE MINERS are absolutely determined to carry on for another 10 years but because of Covid and the lockdowns they desperately need to raise enough cash to re-open The Cafe on December 2nd so they can carry on running The Food Bank, The School Holidays Dinner Project and The Kids Xmas Parties. After that they’ll all be able take a deep breath, put 2020 behind them and march into 2021 with renewed optimism.
