Story
I'm raising £5,000 for the Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) at Derby and Nottingham Hospitals, and Edison's Light, which supports families through baby loss and funds support packs for grieving siblings.
In July 2024, my sister-in-law Susan, brother-in-law Andrew and my 6-year-old nephew, Daniel - welcomed twins, Emily and Harry, born 15 weeks early at 24+6 weeks. Derby NICU, though not set up for under 28 weeks, stabilised them before they were moved to Nottingham. That began their 3-month NICU journey.
Harry faced multiple complications — brain bleeds, collapsed lungs, NEC, and kidney failure. Despite incredible strength and moments of hope, he passed away on day 20, peacefully. Emily continued to grow stronger, returning to Derby NICU, undergoing laser eye surgery, and finally coming home in October — without needing oxygen, which is rare at her gestation.
The NICU teams became like family to Susan and Andrew. Their compassion and dedication gave them both precious time with Harry and helped Emily thrive. The bereavement support from Jo (Nottingham) and Kate (Derby) was invaluable — especially for Daniel, who still cherishes his “Harry Bear,” donated by Edison's Light.
I am lucky to never have experienced such a traumatic situation like this, so The Purple Cyclist wants to support the teams of Derby, Nottingham NICU and Edison's Light, in a way to push myself as an average cyclist.
On the 26th May 2026 starts the Castle 2 Castle cycle ride - That's Edinburgh Castle to Windsor Castle over 4 days.
I will be cycling alone, but have Estelle, my wife, as the ever trusted director la sportive and all round soigneur.
The training starts now and every donation will push me further to reach the goal.
Your donation will help other families going through similar journeys by funding critical neonatal care and bereavement support. Whether you’re able to give a little or a lot, or simply share the story, I will be truly grateful.
Thank you for your support.
