Story
Kara and Stephanie both experienced difficult fertility journeys whilst trying for their second child. They are using their own history of significant and recurrent baby loss to try and help other families in a similar position.
There are books and online forums available to support parents who lose a baby. However, baby loss affects siblings too. Resources for siblings are much less widely available. Kara and Stephanie have written and illustrated a book to help children understand and talk about how they may feel when their Mummy falls pregnant again after a significant loss. Neither Kara nor Steph could find any other children’s books available with this intention.
The reason for this fundraising page is to be able to provide free copies of the children's paperback book to the local hospital's and to Sussex based baby loss charity Oscar's Wish Foundation who supported Kara after her Stillbirth. Kara and Stephanie also want to use the money to send a copy to each of the Rainbow Clinics nationwide, Rainbow clinics are specialist clinics set up for mothers to be who have previously experienced a stillbirth or neonatal death. They provide a high level of care, by professionals who understand how daunting a rainbow pregnancy is. Having a copy in the waiting area of these clinics can help so many rainbow families.
The book titled 'There's a rainbow baby in my Mummy's tummy' is available to purchase worldwide on Amazon now and all royalties from book sales go to Oscar’s Wish Foundation Charity. However, Kara and Steph want you ensure that low income families who may not be able to afford to purchase the book, can be given a free copy to help them support their existing child/ children when they become pregnant again. They also want to ensure that it can be read for free in rainbow clinic waiting areas so that it is truly accessible to all.
Some more information about the book:
‘A rainbow baby is the term used to describe a baby conceived after a loss. ‘There’s a rainbow baby inside my Mummy’s tummy’ is a book written for children who are aware of and/or remember the death of a baby sibling through late miscarriage, stillbirth or neonatal death.
The book is written to help young children understand and talk about the range of emotions that they may feel when told that their Mummy is pregnant again after a loss. It is designed to validate children’s feelings and to help facilitate an open and honest dialogue between parents and child, at a developmentally appropriate level. There is a question and answer section to help parents respond to difficult questions, if needed.
The book has been thoughtfully written by Dr Kara Davey, a Clinical Psychologist with her own experience of stillbirth. It is written with the aim of helping parents to acknowledge their child’s fears and provide reassurances, where possible. As a Clinical Psychologist, Kara knows that this type of conversation allows children to access positive emotions such as excitement, alongside potential worry too.
The book is beautifully illustrated by Stephanie James. Both Kara and Steph hope that by supporting the emotional needs of children, this will in turn positively impact the whole family.
The book was first published on 1st October 2020 to mark the beginning of baby loss awareness month.
If you feel able to contribute, no matter how small, then both Kara and Steph would be so grateful. Thank you in advance.
