    Story

Why I am raising money for two great charities.

In 2018 I was at my lowest point and I was the stereotype of a male that was suffering, masking my feelings and not talking to anyone. I was suffering with depression and anxiety greatly and I had to take time out of work to ensure I was getting the right treatment. I had days I didn't want to get out of bed, and when I did get out of bed I was instantly tired even after a good 10 hours kip.

After an accumulation of personal events that spiralled out of my control this hole just got deeper and deeper. I started seeking help from Hull & East Yorkshire MIND and other charities in Hull to aid my goal of overcoming my demons.

In 2019 I made my first step into Andy's Man Club which I had been putting off for months. Instantly I felt included, listened to and within weeks I had gained some valuable advice and insight from others that I still carry with me today.

    2 years on...

So, here we are today... 2 years after suffering I have educated myself in mental health, especially in Males in the UK and I'm now qualified in various Mental Health accreditations in order to notice the signs of struggle and help others effectively.

It's taken me 2 years or so to fully be open about my struggles and this has enabled me to gain more insight into where I struggled and help others within their journey. In 2021 I was given the position of Welfare Officer at LADS FC who are a community football team and raise money for mental health charities all over the UK. I am responsible for ensuring the mental wellbeing of the players and anyone connected with the club is taken care of and they have someone to talk to if needed.

Shortly after been made Welfare Officer, I was asked to become a Facilitator of Andy's Man Club in Hull which gives me the responsibility of working with the other facilitators in Hull to ensure the doors open every Monday night for men of all ages and backgrounds to seek help, advice and knowledge from the peer support group.

    Why 45 miles?

Anyone who knows me closely will know that I hate running. I still rate myself as a beginner and even getting a mile and a half is an achievement for me. However, on Mental Health Awareness Week (10-16th May) I will be running 45 miles throughout the week to raise awareness that suicide is the biggest killer in males 45 and under and also to raise money for some great charities so that they can continue to help more people.
