Story

The Challenge

I have set myself a challenge of running 5k every day for a year, no rest days... This challenge will be both mentally and physically difficult, which (weirdly) excites me... I’m in no way, shape or form, an athlete, or somebody who’s even done more than 1 half marathon or a few 10ks, therefore - this is something that definitely won’t come naturally to me, pushing me so far out of my comfort zone, it is sort of scary but incredibly exciting!

Every second of the challenge will be documented via social media, updates coming every single day to involve everyone and create a community surrounding it! I will be involving more and more people throughout the year, giving opportunities for guest runners & events which are aimed at raising awareness, bringing people together and ultimately raising money for two incredible causes.

Why?

At a time where the statement ‘be kind’ is more prominent than ever, and we’re living in a world where social media can be filled with toxic content and click bait - I want to do something that stands out; something that will push me to my limit and test my discipline and determination; I want to give back to worthy causes that I truly believe are making a difference in the community.

The first charity I will be raising awareness and funds for is,

‘Team Hill Charitable Trust’, a charity led by Steve Hill MBE, alongside a team of local volunteers, that aim to give back to local causes within Manchester and surrounding areas. Additionally, the charitable trust actively raise money for international projects in Uganda, making a difference with every donation made. Steve is a deputy head teacher; ultra marathon runner; adventurer; motivational speaker & most recently, the director and founder of Team Hill Charitable Trust, therefore - all donations made throughout the year will be split between Team Hill & my second charity of choice...

The second charity I will be raising awareness & funds for is;

‘Destination Florida Children’s Charity’, a Manchester based charity that raises money to take children with life limiting medical conditions/disabilities away for a once in a lifetime; holiday of their dreams to the most magical place on earth, Florida! Visiting some of the most popular attractions, all the while - taking a huge team of dedicated volunteer doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, and volunteer helpers, all in aid of the children attending to be in the safest of hands all the while, enjoying a care free holiday, which will create an experience that they will never forget.

Why now?

Although the charity focuses are at the top of priority - one of the other reasons I chose to push myself to the limit in this challenge is my own mental health. I’m a 25 year old, actively working in the hospitality industry, and have done for a good few years now... As you know, the hours are long and it can be extremely draining to say the least, but also incredibly rewarding.

Some people will be surprised to hear, that I have struggled with my own mental health for quite some time, often spending my days off work not wanting to go out, or do anything, wanting to spend time on my own and feeling sorry for myself... On the flip side, I also love spending time with family, my wife and dog! This challenge will push me, mentally & physically but also give me a reason to wake up early in the morning and do something great for the world... every day (for a year 👋) all whilst raising money for these incredible causes.

So, the logistics... I will be running 5k a day for 365 consecutive days, from April 1st 2020 - April 1st 2021. If for any reason, im unable to participate one day, I will be making it up at the closest possible date, with the equivalent kilometres (1 day off, 10k the next day) The challenge will be the hardest thing I have ever faced, but one step at a time!

Your donations will make a difference. You will truly be giving money directly to these incredible causes and it is very much appreciated, from both myself & the charities I will be raising for.

Come with me on a journey through all weathers, family holidays, Christmas, new year, incredible highs and significant lows, all whilst coming together to truly make a difference. (All donations will be split equally at the end of the challenge, minus Just-Giving processing fees)

Thank you,

Danny, The Running Manc
