Story

Hello, we are The Young Fund.

Thank you for taking the time to visit our fundraising page. We are three sisters who are trying to raise funds for our mum's health care expenses.

Our Story:

On the 29th November 2016, our mum was admitted into Bishop Auckland Hospital for a partial knee replacement. Prior to the operation our mum was a fit and active young women who worked as a nurse for the NHS. She was a happy and outgoing character who enjoyed life.

On the day of the operation our mum walked down to theatre, ready for a routine operation, and was given a spinal block.

Following surgery, the anaesthetist gave her a femoral nerve block to help with the pain. This nerve block was administered into the wrong place and did not work, leading to the anaesthetist giving her a second femoral nerve block.

Soon after she was returned to the ward, but it was quickly realised that she could not move her leg from the hip down. Our mum was in unbearable pain and was informed that this was nerve pain, thus suggesting she had nerve damage.

After six days our mum was discharged from the hospital still unable to use her leg. She was sent home to us on crutches and on a high dose of medication.

Six weeks later, still with no use in her leg, she returned to Dr Sudaker who was very shocked with her condition. He informed us that he knew the muscles had gone to sleep, and fitted our mum into a full leg brace. She was then sent home.

We are now coming up to a year in November following surgery. Our mum's leg muscles have completely wasted away and she also have foot drop in the same leg. She experiences massive amounts of nerve pain daily, and take high doses of nerve medication.

Test Results:

Various tests have been carried out by the trust including brain and spinal scans. These have all came back perfectly normal as we knew they would being a fit and healthy women prior to the hospital treatment. The minimal test results carried out concerning her leg and foot (nerve conduct tests and MRI, which our local GP had to insist on) have wording that suit the Trust, preventing any liability, rather than helping our mum. Our mum is literally being pushed from one appointment to another but receiving no positive results that help her at all.

Family Life:

Family life has really changed since mum had the operation. It's been a very emotional journey. Mum can't do many of the things she used to do, she has to rely on us for everyday tasks, from getting into bed, getting into the shower, dressing lower half of the body, getting her in and out of the house and in and out of the car. This is difficult for someone who was so independent, busy and hard working. Watching our mum unable to walk normal and always in pain is truly heart breaking. We've had one really tough year and it's time we did something about it, we need to raise this money to get mum the treatment she needs to hopefully walk again!
