I've raised £3000 to Restore one of two remaining 1887 Rochester Bawleys. Thistle RR2. We aim to get her sailing and fishing again.

WHY SUPPORT THIS PROJECT: Not only will you be contributing to saving this historic vessel, you will be part of a growing movement to contribute to move cargo by sail, contributing to protecting our seas and environment. Also, we plan to fish with Thistle RR2 again, using original techniques. We will be joining the growing number of vessels who are working to a more sustainable fleet.
Thistle's History Below:
Saved from the chain saw - THISTLE RR2 - Built in 1887. The last of the Rochester Bawleys. Built by Gill in 1887. She has a 34 feet keel, 13 feet beam and 5 feet draught.
After a long working life including throughout both World Wars, most recently working off Rochester and Gravesend, a smack and Bawley enthusiast, found her sunk in Kingston-on-Thames. He acquired her in 1976, and having rescued her from an almost certain bonfire, began a thorough rebuild to get her back afloat and sailing again. A remarkable achievement by one man.
THISTLE RR2 was later owned and sailed by a local yachtsman based at Hollowshore near Faversham. With her loose-footed mainsail, very tall top mast and long bowsprit she was a beautiful sight and often seen sailing in the Swale, Medway and on the East Coast. Sadly, about 10 years ago, due to a change in circumstance, she was no longer looked after and finally sunk again. It seemed now to be the end, as she was about to head for the chainsaw.
But- it was NOT the end. A group of friends from Iron Wharf boatyard was so concerned by her demise that they decided to act quickly. They got the ‘go ahead’ to re-float the old Bawley and at the end of July 2017 she was towed to Iron Wharf in Faversham.
The group also purchased her sails and managed to track down the mast. The mast was stepped in a tabernacle to be able to ‘shoot’ Rochester Bridge. Topmast and bowsprit will have to be found.
THISTLE RR2 has been partially recaulked and had her deck temporarily sealed.
A Kelvin engine has been purchased and completely renovated. The engine is being prepped ready for its fitting.
There are many jobs which need to be carried out and the owners have already funded much of it themselves. Also the family of the original owners have been incredibly generous.
Now we need further support to get some re-planking done on the hull, replace the covering boards and replace the deck.
We are looking at raising funds through the National Historic Ships organisation and our local Council.
