Story

Thomas is 14 years old and has cerebral palsy which means he has permanent brain damaged caused at birth which means he cannot walk independently. He uses a Kaye walker, sticks or a wheelchair to move around. To ease the pain of his condition, he endures daily physiotherapy to help his movement and management of stiffness in his limbs. With Thomas’s condition since birth he has faced so many adversities and many medical procedures including Botox operations in his legs to help him move and walk. But this does not stop him!

Thomas is an international RaceRunner who took up this wonderful adapted sport in 2014. Thomas says: “I just love the freedom of being able to run just like other children except I use a Racerunner to help me”.

Thomas competed for the first time competitively in May 2015 in Manchester and he broke the National Age Group record for Under 12’s for 100 metres and 200 metres Racerunning. In June 2015, he broke these records again and set a new National record for 400 metres and then in July 2015 at Stoke Mandeville stadium (at the spiritual home of the Paralympics) he set three new National Age group records. At the National CP Championships in September 2015 he broke the National record for the 200m again.

Thomas represented England at the European RaceRunning Championship in Denmark in 2016. He came home as quadruple European Under 13 Junior Cup Champion. In September 2016 Thomas also won four National RaceRunning titles for 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m.

In January 2017 Thomas underwent major hip surgery to help create a new socket for his hip and he also had a plate inserted in his femur. Thomas spent 10 days in Sheffield Children’s Hospital including his 13th Birthday and then 7 weeks in a hip spica from chest to calf. Through the long days and nights of recovery and rehabilitation Thomas dreamed of being back on his RaceRunner. He fought hard and in September 2017, he ran in the season finale in Nottingham at the National Championships. We could not believe what we witnessed that day as he won four golds and ran close to breaking his PB’s in all his events.

Thomas has now been selected to represented England in August 2018 at the Cerebral Palsy CPISRA World Games in Spain.

RaceRunning has recently been announced as a Paralympic discipline and Thomas's dream is to one day compete in a Paralympic Games. We want Thomas to compete with the best possible equipment he can and we are raising funds for a StormRunner RaceRunner for Thomas to enable him to maximise his training with the best possible kit.

Thank you for reading his story and even the smallest of donations will help his dream of becoming a Paralympic athlete.

Thank You!
