Story

Thomas’ story

After several failed applications to DIY SOS we have set up this fundraising page.

Our son Thomas age 11 has been fighting a battle with an undiagnosed regressive condition since he was 6 years old. After ruling out Batten Disease our Neurologist thinks (99% certain) Thomas has a rare variant of Batten disease which will be confirmed by genetics. Our lovely smiley boy has gradually faded away to a boy who can not talk, walk or sit unaided. Over the past year he has been in & out of hospital, he even in hospital on Christmas day

Over 3 years ago we applied for a disabled facilities grant (DFG) which was later approved so we could make adaptions to our home in Coal Aston, Dronfield. The DFG only covers the basic needs of the disabled person and doesn’t cover integration adaptions so the person can be included in normal family life. This is why DIY SOS are inundated with applications.

We would love make the existing ground floor accessible with space for Thomas to be included in family activities by rearranging the floor plan (not covered by the disabled facilities grant)

To make the garden accessible for Thomas to enjoy the outside space with his family and friends, would love to include some sensory planting too

To make the access to the house easier and safer by lowering the curb and making an even surface

To provide some storage space

This would be a fantastic start to be able to achieve this so Thomas can enjoy the rest of his life in a suitable family home.
