Story
------What------
Aren’t we fortunate to have so much? To live in a society that welcomes diversity and allows us so many freedoms? Do you have to worry about war and persecution? Do you currently have enough money to eat tonight?
------Why------
There are a lot of people who do not have these luxuries that we are lucky to have. Some of those people in our local communities are refugees who have had to flee their country to save the lives of themselves and their families. Often stigmatised by the media and those with hearts harder than yours and ours. Please sponsor Joseph and I, every penny will help thousand 4 1000 to house destitute refugees - they are a local, grassroots response to the crisis (and they don’t waste your money on television adverts!)
------So what do you want from me, and what is happening?------
Please donate now! Joseph and I are participating in a fundraising event for our synagogue (this is part of that!) The challenge is for us to stay awake all night and study the Jewish book (Torah). Every synagogue across the world will be doing this to remember that time when the children of Israel received the law on Mount Sinai. It is a challenge, however, so please sponsor and know that you are helping somebody, who is on the very edge of survival. (Then you will feel excellent all week, knowing that you have done something amazing!)
The study lasts eight hours, starting at 9PM on Saturday the 9th of May (this coming Saturday) at Brighton and Hove " Synagogue.
------Further------
More info if you would like it: the festival is called Shavuot (Also known as Pentecost or the feast of weeks). There is a lot of disagreement about the day of this festival, but most rabbis agree that it falls on Shabbat (Saturday), I don’t fully understand the calculation (something to do with how long it took Moses to climb and descend from the mountain) but the people of Israel were commanded to be ritually clean and have their clothes washed, so I’m assuming that all of the Jewish launderettes, 6000 years ago were only open on a Friday. :P
Even just £1 - Please let these people know that we care enough to put words and thoughts in to action!
