What Is the Jamboree?

The World Scout jamboree is the biggest scout camp in the world, with attendees of around 50,000 Scouts from around the world, aged 14 - 17. It is held every four years, the 24th World Scout Jamboree will be in United States from 22 July 2019 - 2 August 2019. The Jamboree is above all an educational event that brings together the world’s young people to promote peace, mutual understanding and to develop leadership and life skills. The World Scout Jamboree includes a wide variety of outdoor adventure activities and places a great emphasis on everyday life and social interaction among different cultures that is experienced through the Scouting campsite.

I have been fortunate enough to be asked to support this event as IST (International Support Team) member. This is a working role, IST make sure that the camp runs efficiently and we can be given a role from litter picking to roles relating to ensuring the health and safety of the camp. Without IST the jamboree would not be able to run.

Unfortunately, being selected also incurs a cost. The pricing is set so that every country will pay a percentage of their average wage, this allows for country with a lower average wage will still pay the same percentage as county’s like the UK. This means the price of £2,995 (that does not just fund myself to attend but others from less wealthy country’s as well) is required from me to support the event but this is a large sum of money for an apprentice to be able to afford, (as you can imagine.) So I have set myself a Challenge 3705 Hip throws before the WSJ in 2019.
