Story
This June I am going to Honduras on a voluntary placement to work with the charity Global Brigades as part of their legal aid team.
Global Brigades is the world's largest student-led charity, and it works to promote global health and sustainable development. The charity works with remote, impoverished communities around the world, and alongside its legal team, there are groups which provide medical training, improve water supplies and create better banking networks.
I will be working alongside a group of students to assist and learn from the full-time lawyers who work in different rural communities across Honduras. Often, the people in these communities are unaware of many of their rights in marriages, in property disputes, and do not know how to protect themselves from domestic abuse. We will work with them to give them the knowledge and skills required to fight for these basic human rights.
Each student who is volunteering on this programme has been given the task of raising £1000. The money raised will be used to support and sustain the work of the fulll-time lawyers who support these communities, aswell as the local staff who keep the programme running. In addition, the money will be used to fund our expenses for the placement, namely for translators, guides, transport, accomodation and security.
The work of this charity is incredible, and so any support that you are able to give me to be able to go on this programme would be so greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much!! xxxxxx
