Story
I am taking part in Brighton Half Marathon on 24 February 2019 and the Virgin Money London Marathon on 28 April 2019 to raise money for TAWI (Transkei Animal Welfare Initiative).
TAWI is a small outreach non-profit organisation based on the Wildcoast of South Africa's Eastern Cape that works to improve the lives of rural animals.
TAWI workers and volunteers travel into rural communities by 4×4, quad or on foot, to deliver basic animal healthcare services and medications where they are needed most.
TAWI educate animal owners, sharing knowledge with families to help them take better care of their animals. Good homes will break the cycle of having to remove, rehabilitate and re-home (or, as is too often the case globally, euthanise).
In an area where over-breeding is a problem and only 1 in 10 puppies survives their first 12 months, sterilisation is important to humanely control unwanted litters and prevent suffering.
In 2017 TAWI sterilised 579 Dogs and Cats, vaccinated 1297 animals against rabies and provided 2125 parasite treatments - this in addition to hundreds of treatments for injuries and infections - servicing a total of 19 marginalised rural communities.
To Date in 2018 (Oct) over 700 sterilisations have been achieved. TAWI's 2019 target is to sterilise over 1000 animals. As a not-for-profit, self-sustaining and ethical body TAWI need donations to continue their work.
Taking on the 26.2 miles in April will be a little bit easier knowing it is for a good cause.
