Two years ago my son Timmy was diagnosed with a rare type of liver cancer, which doctors were reluctant to treat until they could find the primary source of the cancer. MRI scans, CAT scans and a brilliant technique which involved swallowing a camera to take millions of pictures of the body from the inside failed to find the original cancer. It wasn't until a year later, that doctors finally discovered the primary source - an aggressive pancreatic cancer that gave us very little hope that Timmy would survive.

The NHS acted fast and were fantastic. His liver cancer was treated with ablation, which stunted the growth of the tumours. Timmy was also given pioneering chemotherapy and after responding well to treatment, underwent gruelling 8 hour surgery to remove the tail of the pancreas where the cancer had been contained.

We were given hope. It looked like Timmy was going to make a recovery - something almost unheard of with this combination of liver and pancreatic cancer.

However, last week we were given an unexpected blow. In Timmy's follow up appointment after the surgery, we were told that we would need £15,000 to pay for the final bit of treatment - radiation therapy - which could leave him cancer free. We just don't have that type of money. Myself and my husband are both retired and Timmy has been unable to work since his original diagnosis. To be given such hope that Timmy could survive despite the odds, only to be told that the final round of treatment will be denied is beyond devastating.

Our only hope is to try to raise funds ourselves. We're a proud family, Timmy especially, and having to ask for help from others isn't easy. But we're desperate to get Timmy the final bit of treatment he needs.
