Ruby is a 15 year old girl with Retts syndrome which has significantly affected her life. She is unable to sit without specialist seating. She is unable to talk, and she is unable to stand. She has problems with her breathing, causing her to have recurrent pneumonia's leading her to be in hospital for long periods. She has a significant scoliosis which is also severely impacting on her internal organs as well as being very uncomfortable. Due to the COVID-19 crisis Ruby has been unable to access school due to her shielding and therefore is unable to access any equipment to support her physically. This means she is missing out on hydrotherapy and an Innowalk which were the only two methods of exercise that she has been able to access comfortably in the last few years.

An innowalk at home would change Ruby's quality of life. She currently is only able to be transferred from one chair to another for comfort, and does not tolerate any kind of standing frame or stretching. She needs to exercise to be able to improve her circulation, breathing, muscle tone and strength and ultimately her overall well-being. An innowalk would be able to provide this.

The Innowalk is a piece of equipment which allows Ruby to be in a position of weight-bearing that is comfortable for her whilst her legs move in a reciprocal pattern. Having access to physical activity at home can hopefully help reduce her risk of chest infections and the need for hospital admissions, whilst also improving her gastrointestinal function and general comfort. After using it for 6 weeks consistently in school, she was able to sit for the first time on her Mum's lap unsupported, something she has not done before.
