Why I’m Raising Money for Grange Academy
I’m raising money for Grange Academy, a special needs school that played a crucial role in shaping who I am today. As a former student, I know first hand how vital the support and resources provided by Grange are for children with learning difficulties. It was a place where I felt understood, supported, and given the tools to succeed.
Now it’s my turn to give back.
On August 29th 2025, I’ll be taking on the Summit for Grange, a demanding one day endurance challenge across the Lake District. The goal is simple: push myself far beyond comfort in the spirit of resilience to raise funds for a school that teaches that same lesson every day.
The Challenge
The Summit for Grange is a three part mountain event combining running, cycling and climbing. It covers more than 51 miles and includes 11,150 feet of elevation gain. That is the equivalent of climbing Ben Nevis twice, then adding another 2,000 feet for good measure.
Segment One: Mountain Run from Helvellyn to Glenridding
The challenge begins with a 6.13 mile run starting near Helvellyn. I’ll climb to its summit at 3,117 feet, then descend steep and rocky terrain into Glenridding. This section includes 2,375 feet of elevation gain and sets the tone for the day ahead.
Segment Two: Mountain Cycle from Glenridding to Wasdale Head
From Glenridding I’ll switch to the bike for a 36.4 mile ride through some of the most punishing cycling routes in the country. That includes Kirkstone Pass, Wrynose Pass and Hardknott Pass, with gradients as steep as 30 percent. This leg features 4,050 feet of climbing and will test endurance and focus to the limit.
Segment Three: Final Run to Scafell Pike, Great Gable and Kirk Fell
At Wasdale Head I’ll transition to the final 8.7 mile run, tackling Scafell Pike (England’s highest peak at 3,209 feet), Great Gable and Kirk Fell. This final stretch includes 4,725 feet of climbing, closing out the day with a brutal ascent and descent across some of the most rugged ground in the UK.
Why It Matters
Grange Academy gave me a foundation to build on when life felt uncertain. It still does that for children today, providing a tailored and compassionate education for those with complex learning needs. The funds raised will go directly to improving resources, facilities and support for current and future students.
This challenge is about more than climbing mountains. It is about showing the students at Grange, and anyone facing uphill battles, that with effort, patience and belief, the summit is possible.
How You Can Help
If you are able to spare anything, no matter how small, it would mean a great deal. Every donation helps provide the care, tools and opportunities these students deserve.
Thank you for reading and for supporting this cause. Let’s climb together.
