Story
Last year my 24 year old cousin was diagnosed with a large arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in his brain which, like an aneurysm, was waiting to rupture and leave him brain damaged or dead. Despite initially being told it was inoperable, they managed to find a neurosurgeon who removed the AVM. After four major haemorrhages and extensive surgery Sam is on the road to recovery.Whilst he is improving massively, the hospital is unable to grant him full-time rehabilitation. His family and fiancé do not want to send him to a nursing home and so are preparing to move him back to the family home.
This however requires some changes at home to accommodate Sam in his condition. Firstly, they need a vehicle that can fit Sam's wheelchair in the back. This will cost between fifty to sixty thousand dollars after selling their previous vehicle. Secondly, the bathroom, which currently contains a step and a shower over a bath, needs to be refitted to be accessible for Sam. This would require the fitting of Ramps, handles and other equipment. Lastly he will need long term therapy from physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech therapy in order to get him back on his feet. Both his immediate and extended family are determined to get him home after all this time in hospital as so he can begin to gain back his original abilities such as speech and walking.
Sam is quick to acknowledge the help he gets, he has fought so hard to live and is truly an inspiration to everyone that meets him. We believe that with help he will be able to live an independent life and continue to grow as the amazing inspiration that he is.
I will be shaving my head on the 20th of August (page will remain open until the 20th of September however) in order to raise £300, which I will then donate directly to my cousin Prue's "gofundme" page, which has already raised a tens of thousands of dollars, thanks to the generosity of family friends. The link to Prue's page (which contains a link to a more detail story) is directly below along with some other news links to Sam's contain.
