Update: They have been back! Unfortunately the thieves have been back and taken lead from another part of the church roof. This is especially heartbreaking as we had almost reached our target and were awaiting a date for installation of a full CCTV backed roof alarm system. Two days ago we discovered this further loss. We are now going to look into replacing the lead with an alternative material less attractive to uncaring and callous thieves who think nothing of desecrating sacred places and beautiful historic buildings.
The week before Easter 2018 thieves took all the lead from the south aisle roof of this beautiful Grade I listed church building. This is the third loss of lead over the years and repairs will cost about £15,000. We now also feel that it is imperative that we install an approved, monitored alarm system (cost about £5,000). Insurance will only cover half of the roof replacement cost. We have some limited financial resources and are seeking grant aid from various bodies, but esxpect to have a shortfall of about £5,000 overall.
We are particularly appealing to the local community, who will no doubt wish to have the church available for baptisms, weddings and funerals even if they do not attend regularly. The church is also used for a range of social activities (there is no other facility within the village) and we are well in to our second year of running an innovative 'Brunch at 11' service for people who are not regualr churchgoers.
