Story

Moore love created by Tracy Moore

The purpose is to raise money to support terminally ill adults whilst in hospital in Southampton General Hospital

In memory of my much-loved parent’s Frank and Doreen Moore.

Whom both suffered terminal illness and were in and out of Southampton General hospital

My dad had lung cancer mesothelioma caused by asbestos

My mum had blood cancer, COPD and was on oxygen, had the start of vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s, at the end suffered a stroke.

The continual challenges and fight that we all faced when they entered into the hospital caused pain, fear, loneliness & frustration whilst they were at the very time in their lives when they needed the most support as they were frail, weak and vulnerable and unknowledgeable and without me didn't have a voice.

Although there were some amazing nurses and consultants especially on wards C7 and F8 There were so many other gaps in treatment information, and they just don’t have the time or often resources

Although there are many organisations out there and even in the hospital I observed clearly when my dad was in hospital then 7years later when my mum entered the hospital on a similar journey to my dad’s .

whilst you’re in the hospital bed there's still a lack of support and this is when it really matters and you’re on your own especially if you don’t have any family support but even the families are exhausted of fighting and unaware of where to get the support

I was fighting continually trying to get my dads needs met 7years later my mums which at times brought me to my knees, with the stress which at times took time away from giving my mum the love she really needed

I've vowed when my dad died, I would strive to put things in place to support positive change for the lives of terminally ill patients’ whist in Southampton General hospital

I didn’t manage it then as my mum lived with me and I looked after her but now I want to set something up to support that change as I know I’ve heard so many others go through similar circumstances.

This is just the start as I don’t yet have the people or resources however I know that it will be close to so many peoples heart that have had these struggles

This is close to my heart means so much to me because i had to continually fight to support both my parents when they were facing their most vulnerable time of their lives which caused so much pain and sadness, however, that can be learnt from and be turned into good and bring change with MOORE LOVE

These are some of the resources we want to raise money to set up -

For Patients to have support in writing their own hospital passports so that all staff are aware of their needs and wishes, So that information is clear and consistent & doesn't get missed.

To change policy so that treatment plans & medication are accessible for the patient and their consented desired family members to read in a tablet format at the bedside

At least two trained and experienced PIC line nurses on every ward.as staff on some wards were not trained or experienced which caused unnecessary blood tests and pain and anxiety

Better Staff training in how to deal with patients and their families when they’re in distress and staff not reacting in a negative way, how to have difficult conversation with compassion

To be given the knowledge to know what a good death looks like if they wish and know their choices or refusing treatment if they wish clearly defined with Advanced action care plans

Having 24/7 access to support by a telephone support line

Robust complaints procedure that listens and creates action

Being made more comfortable with the little things ie towels that are not like sandpaper, tablets for those who want them to watch favourite things

Bringing joy into the ward with companionship and requests of patients so that a terminal illness doesn't have to be such a sad lonely place

I’ve vowed i would set something up to support change as i know so many patients and their families go through the same thing
