Story
Transition Houses are temporary, safe places for LGBT+ refugees in Kenya. Typically for between 1 and 5 nights, people can be housed safely in hotels, apartments etc and given training, transport, help with finding work/relocation, or reconciliation with families and communities back home. Each case is unique, but previously the project has helped over 80 people during a 3 month period.
In November 2017, two Kenyan Human Rights Defenders came to York on a 6 month placement. During this time they touched many hearts with their quiet courage and determination to help others. We felt we had to help and support their project however we can. A recent fundraising evening organised by York LGBT Forum and Time to be Out York raised £600 for the project, and we have set up this page to help raise even more.
While LGBT+ people can still face 14 years in prison for their sexuality, Kenya is seen as a safer country than many in East Africa. The proceeds of your donation will go directly into the hands of those working on the ground to help LGBT+ refugees to move on with their lives.
