Weʼve raised £690 to plant 4 new trees on Hither Green Lane this year!

Funded on Thursday, 27th July 2017

    Story

    Hello!

    ***
Target was adjusted from 2 to 4 trees! Within two weeks, residents and businesses raised enough money to plant two new trees on Hither Green Lane this year.
    ***

I live on Hither Green Lane and strongly believe how much more enjoyable to live and shop it could be with some trees. Hither Green Lane now has only very few trees, if any(!), where once plenty stood – according to the historic pictures at the Hither Green station.

Together with few local residents, we reached out to the Council but their resources are scarce for any tree initiative - despite massive investments in infrastructure in Lewisham.

So, I started realizing that it is up to us to do something, if we want it to change in the community. We all – local residents and shop owners/businesses - can improve Hither Green Lane. Therefore, let’s pull together and raise the sum for 2 new trees this year!
Focus will be on the stretch between Thornford Rd and George Ln.

How much: One tree costs £240.
What: This includes tree pit preparation, sapling selection (approx.. 3-4 m high), maintenance and insurance for 2 years until the tree is fully established.
Who: A tree guardian. Neighbours and shop owners can share the responsibility to water the tree for its first 2 years.
Deadline: Funds will need to be collected by next week Wednesday July 5, 2017 for the winter planting season 2017/2018.

Please note £5, £10 and £20 is plenty to donate and is perfectly respectable.

Contributions are tax deductible and will be made through the Brockley Society (Street Trees for Living project) that is set up as a registered charity and is helping to coordinate the planning with Lewisham Council.

If we were to plant a couple of trees every year from now on, we could steadily green Hither Green Lane.

See you on Hither Green Lane, maybe at the Street Library!

    Many thanks!
    Stephanie

Dear mighty supporter, FYI, we have launched a Petition for a safer Hither Green Lane yesterday: https://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/hither-green-lane-streetscape-improvements. The improvement scheme also envisages the planting of new trees. Council keeps delaying. Please, sign and help us spread the word. All members of your family (wives, husbands, sons and daughters) who live, study or work in the Lewisham Borough count (no age restriction). We have gotten more than 100 signatures in less than 24 hours. Many thanks for all your help! Ahoi

to add a small correction...of course, it is FIVE NEW trees - with the support from the Hither Green Community Association. This will bring up the offline amount to 574 Pounds and online 650 Pounds! Thanks again, all, for your support and best wishes! Greetings, Stephanie

Dear all, the street tree campaign for Hither Green Lane comes to an end. We have raised an amazing 650 Pounds online and 334 Pounds offline! - which will allow us to plant FIVE NEW trees on Hither Green Lane! Deducing the campaign fees (5%), this will leave us with only a small funding gap. We requested a Lime, Maple, Maidenhair Tree (all opposite Co-op and Bryan&Keegan estate agents), a Serviceberry (in front of Zenubian) and an ornamental pear (opposite St Swithun's church). I will post updates on the Hither Green FB group. Thank you! Ahoi!

Heya, wonderful news: Hither Green Community Association confirmed that they will finance a FIFTH TREE for Hither Green Lane this year! Great! As for our campaign, 9 days more to go, 100 Pounds more to raise for 4 trees. I just received donations from Berlin and Zurich. It seems the "whole world" loves Hither Green. Smiles. If you or a friend, colleague or family member can spare 5 or 10 Pounds for a really good cause, please encourage, join and donate. Will update soon on locations and species. Thank you! Stephanie

Great Idea! I live on Hither Green Lane. I've always thought it could do some more greenery and connect to nature! We should do a window box competition too! ;-)
