Story

My name is James, and I’m from Eastbourne.

I left home to join the Royal Air Force, full of ambition and drive. But during basic training, my world turned upside down—my wife suffered a stroke, leaving her partially paralyzed. The years that followed were some of the hardest of our lives, filled with pain, uncertainty, and an unrelenting fight for her recovery.

The Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund stood by us during those difficult years—not only supporting me as I began my career, but also helping me care for my wife. As her needs grew, I came to see that my mission was now at home. I made the heartbreaking decision to leave the military to be by her side full-time.

After years of surgeries, rehabilitation, and sheer determination, my wife made a full recovery and regained her mobility. Her strength inspired me, and I later rejoined the military as a reservist, proudly driving tank transporters. Seeing me passionate and fulfilled again brought her joy, too.

But life continued to test us. We spent years battling for housing support, and at our lowest point—with the threat of emergency accommodation looming—I turned to the British Legion. They, along with advice from the Army Benevolent Fund, helped us secure a new home. The RAF Benevolent Fund stepped in once more, offered support for our children when we needed stability the most.

Now, it’s my turn to give back.

I’m organizing the Tri-Service Charity Rally where passion meets purpose. Over three days, we’ll travel across the UK, visiting seven military locations. This event is more than a rally; it’s a united effort by veterans, serving members, and supporters of all branches—Army, Navy, and Air Force—to raise funds for the Army Benevolent Fund, Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund, and Royal Navy Benevolent Trust.

These charities change lives. I know—because they changed mine.

Let’s ride for a cause. Let’s support those who’ve served.
