Story

We know times are hard in this current climate and now might not be the time to ask for support when so many are struggling. But we believe it’s so important to bring joy and colour if possible.. And we believe art can do that.

Every day hundreds of school children and families walk through the underpass on the Silk Mill Estate in Tring Hertfordshire..…

It’s regularly painted at cost but within minutes of a fresh coat it’s usually graffitied with multiple inapropriate words and symbols..

We think the community deserves better, it’s something teachers from the schools have been asking for (it’s the route taken to Tring Sports centre and Tring School) and we also think the underpass should be something nice for people to walk through… an art installation..

We’ve been given the permission from Herts County Council and Sally Symington our Lib Dem Counciller to have a renowned graffiti artist paint a beautiful mural for everyone to enjoy that they can call their own

But we need funding ..

We have identified and have personal experience of being those at school who weren’t academic and weren’t sporty and felt very lost and that they didn’t have a place or a future..

We will be giving schools a choice of themes for the children to vote on because this will be their piece of art and it HAS to be their decision, they will also get an opportunity to add their own piece of art to be immortalised within the mural.

The children and community will be involved with this project from start to finish and if we succeed all the unsavoury graffiti’d areas and underpasses could have the same treatment..

This installation will also be protected with an anti graffiti coating as recommended by DJ, artist and actor Goldie MBE, who has been instrumental in kickstarting and garnering interest in this project - we don’t think for one minute anyone would vandalise it but we want to make sure it’s looked after. Especially as it belongs to the community and we’d like to cover more areas in art..

Not only do we plan to paint the mural but due to overwhelming support from artists (after an instagram post by Meredith Hepner and Goldie went crazy) with any surplus funds we plan to create and fund after school workshops to educate and inspire children and budding artists by getting them involved with the project whilst teaching a skill.

But we do need some help with funding and that’s why we set up a crowd funder.

We want the best artists and the best mural for everyone but we just need your help to kickstart that..

This won’t be a long drawn out process because the council have already given us the green light and we have been backed by Herts CC and Liberal Democrat Councillor Sally Symington - this can happen as soon as possible..

So tell all your friends, tell local businesses, tell the sports clubs, tell anyone you know, because this is all for the community, art for the community, this is art for everyone.

Any businesses or individuals who donate over £100 will be listed on our Commemorative Plaque of Thanks .. #paintingthetown #wearetheartists
