War Horse Memorial
A year ago I decided to create a full-size horse sculpture made entirely from driftwood, collected myself from the South Coast. It was the centenary of the first World War and I thought it would be a fitting tribute to honour the bravery and huge sacrifice made by equines in WW1 and all human conflicts throughout history.
The horse took park in the Remembrance Day Ceremony and was displayed in Priory Park, Chichester, for one day only, due to it being vulnerable to vandalism. There was an overwhelming positive response to the sculpture and the Mayor and the people of Chichester expressed a wish that they would like the horse in the Memorial Park permanently. My vision is to cast the horse in bronze and donate it to the park for people to enjoy and remember the horses who died alongside the brave soldiers.
I think it is incredibly important that we honour these equines alongside the men who fought. These animals had no choice and thousands paid the ultimate price. Then at the end of the war the surviving horses that had served the army so loyally throughout, were abandoned and suffered appallingly, ending up as beasts of burden.
