Tritax Symmetry Charity of the Year 2021

Tritax Symmetry are very pleased to have chosen to support Sam's Rehabilitation Fund and Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) as our 'Charity of the Year' for 2021.

On April 18th 2017, Marcus Phayer’s (Associate Development Director at TSL) nephew, Sam, underwent life-saving and life changing brain surgery.

Sam had the right side of his brain disconnected and partially removed (Hemispherotomy) at Great Ormond Street Hospital due to uncontrolled seizures resulting from a very rare brain condition called Sturge Weber Syndrome.

Now aged 4, Sam will have ongoing needs for therapy, equipment, home adaptations, and even future surgery as he continues to grow and develop.

Sam’s Rehabilitation Fund has been created to raise money towards the cost of Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) surgery and his long-term rehabilitation costs. It is a ground-breaking operation that is only done in the US at St Louis Children’s Hospital, by Dr Parks.

He is the only surgeon who has done the operation on only a couple of children who have had a Hemispherotomy. However, he regularly operates on children who have hemiplegia and the results are astonishing. Not only do they no longer have any spasticity and walk better, more importantly they are not in pain and their long term prognosis is much improved. If Sam doesn’t have this surgery at a young age, by the time he is an adult he could be in a wheelchair full time.

GOSH saved his life, but aftercare in child patients doesn't receive the level of funding needed from the NHS to fully support children and their families, so in 2021 we will strive to raise funds to help better Sam’s quality of life for the immediate future and beyond.

With 619 children and young people from across the UK arriving through the doors of GOSH, every day brings new challenges. Doctors and nurses battle the most complex illnesses, and the brightest minds come together to achieve pioneering medical breakthroughs.

This extraordinary hospital has always depended on charitable support to give seriously ill children the best chance to fulfil their potential.

Funds raised go towards creating world-class care facilities, supporting both children and families through providing accommodation and easing the burden of travel expenses, contributing towards the cost of breakthrough research into rare and complex conditions, and funding vital life-saving equipment to ultimately deliver the best care to children.

A better future for seriously ill children starts at GOSH, and over the course of 2021 the TSL team will be pushing themselves to undertake challenges and hold fundraising events to help this truly incredible hospital based in the heart of London, and to raise funds for this courageous and brave little boy.

We are privileged as a company to join Sam’s journey and contribute what we can to the betterment of his future as both boy and man. Action taken today at such a key developmental time in his life can have a huge bearing on his future.

TSL are incredibly thankful for any donation, however large or small, and monies raised will be split equally between Sam's Rehabilitation Fund and GOSH.

Any donation you make can have such a large impact.

Thank you.
