Story

The Amazing Ugandan Project

***Deadline for fundraising Sunday 10th November***

The Ugandan Project was established in 2017 with the aim of raising enough money to build a new classroom block at Achangali Primary School in North East Uganda, Africa.

The school was severely damaged by strong winds which destroyed the roof of a current classroom block. This meant that the school was only able to facilitate half the children it should due to the lack of safe classrooms. We wanted to ensure that all children in Abim, and the surrounding areas, were able to access education. The children who are currently attending school are often not protected from the elements, which range from extreme heat to monsoon rains. Children who live too far away from the school to travel every day stay at the school for a term at a time, so have to live and sleep in these conditions too. Providing a new, secure learning environment for the children would ensure that they could learn and thrive; protected from the elements and feeling safe. The new classroom block would benefit all children of the village and the surrounding area.

In July 2019, three UP volunteers travelled to the small district of Abim to deliver the £4,515.54 raised to build a new classroom block and improve conditions around the school. During the month we spent at the school, the building work was progressing well, with the support of the local community. However, the roofer who had offered to build the roof as a gesture of good will was taken ill and is unable to complete the job. Understandably, no other roofers are willing to undertake the job unpaid, which means we need to raise an additional £1,000 to complete the project.

The Ugandan Project came about through friendships made in 2008 during Liverpool's Capital of Culture year. The Project, and our goals for what we want to provide for the people of Abim, have continued to grow and develop ever since. Everyone involved in the Ugandan Project is a volunteer who feels passionately about helping those who are less fortunate.

This was a once in a lifetime experience for us to visit, and be accepted, into a small local community. We are devastated that for reasons out of anyones control we are unable to complete the job we set out to do. We established excellent relationships with the staff and students at Achangali Primary School and we would love to be able to complete this project for them.

We are so close to reaching our goal but need to raise an additional £1,000 to be able to complete this fantastic project; we just need one last push to get us over the line! If we are able to exceed our target we would also be able to make further improvements to the learning and living conditions of the students and staff. All donations, however big or small, mean the world to us and the people of Abim, and will make a massive difference to the staff and students at Achangali Primary School.
