Weʼre raising £2,500 to help fund the Uckfield Community Fridge

What we are for

A Community Fridge is a simple idea. So simple in fact, that there are already over 150 in the UK already! Essentially, locals and businesses can bring excess (but within use-by date) food, and we share it with those in the community that want it. This not only reduces food waste, but also helps those that might need a top up to the food shop that week.

This really is a project for everyone to take part in! You can bring food along one day, and take some the next. We are working with Uckfield Town Council, Uckfield Food Bank, C J Thorne & Co., the Uckfield Lions, and many other local businesses and organisations. But what we really need is the support of local residents, who will be the lifeblood of the Community Fridge.

Help us to help you

We are so close to having a community fridge in Uckfield: We have been given land by Uckfield Town Council, and we have fundraised enough from local organisations to buy the shipping container to house it in. We now need your help - the Uckfield community's help - in getting this project finished, so that we have a place to get food to those that need it and want it, and reduce Uckfield's food waste.

Please chip in whatever you can today to support an Uckfield Community Fridge!

We are also affiliated with Hubbub, who work to support Community Fridges across the UK in maintaining high hygiene standards.

The nitty gritty

The Uckfield Community Fridge is formed as a Community Interest Company, with four Directors. We have worked very closely with Uckfield Town Council, who have been hugely supportive and given us permission to place our fridge on land close to Luxford Field:

We have managed to fundraise enough to buy a shipping container to house the Fridge, which will look something like the Dundee West End Community Fridge:

We know times are really tough right now, and we took a long time deliberating about asking for money. After all, we want this to be free for Uckfield residents. However, child hunger and an explosion of demand for food banks are just the tip of the iceberg in showing that there is something gravely wrong in our society, and in Uckfield too.

Many more challenges are also mounting: from the growing environmental impact of food on our planet and rising levels of obesity, to the uncertainty faced by the hundreds of thousands of people employed in the catering and hospitality industry. These problems can’t be solved with a quick sticking plaster, but require people locally coming together with a shared understanding of the problems and identifying the best solutions.

The headlines may be national, but solutions can be found at the local level, as we have seen time and time again in the delivery of emergency food during Covid-19. Food partnerships are a brilliant way to bring together residents, local government, community groups, and businesses to promote good food for all. In places where they already exist, they have helped drive collective progress on many of the issues above.

Thanks for reading - we will really appreciate anything you can give. We look forward to giving back when we open this year, but only with your help!

We are absolutely delighted to have fundraised £1,000! Thank you so much to the people and organisations that have donated - every penny really does mean a lot to us. As you can see in the below image, we are well on the way to having an area ready for the fridge. Our thanks go to C J Thorne and Co. and Uckfield Town Council, who have worked together to ensure the groundworks are complete for the arrival of the shipping container. We are still a way from our target of £2,500, so please share on your Facebook - we really appreciate it!
