Weʼve raised $10 to fund Uganda's only LGBTQ+ swimming team
- Bristol, UK
- Funded on Friday, 19th January 2018
Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered charity.
The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.
The Uganda Kuchus Aquatics Team (UKAT) are the only LGBTQ+ swimming team in Uganda. These brave, out and proud swimmers, social and political LGBTI activists attended the IGLA International LGBTQ+ Aquatics Championships at the World Out Games Miami earlier this year. It was an opportunity for Uganda LGBTQ+ activist athletes to take part in an international queer gathering, forge connections with other LGBTQ+ people from across the globe, and compete in a safe and supportive environment.
Equipment, facilities and training all come at a cost, which is why UKAT is seeking to raise funds to pay for:
- A professional coach, to enable all UKAT members to practice and compete in future competitions.
- Entry fees to the hotel pools, where UKAT practice.
- Equipment, such as customised UKAT bathing suits and swimming goggles.
- Registration of the team
All funds raised will be used to support the ongoing costs of running UKAT, while their members train for upcoming competitions. The target goal is $10,000. Any donation you can make would be greatly appreciated.

About the fundraiser
I'm Michael. I spent some time in Uganda last year as part of my PhD fieldwork, where I met inspiring activists and learned more about their work, including UKAT. I've set up this fundraiser on their behalf as a small way of giving back.
