    Story

    Final update 7 October 2019

We set up this JustGiving account initially in order to purchase specialist educational materials to take to Kampala, Uganda at Easter 2018. The account has not been very active recently and is due to close on 15th November. However, our support for CEVIC Uganda continues. We recently purchased and sent another reconditioned Perkins brailler to ensure that all pupils at CEVIC have one. We also continue to make a bi-monthly donation towards the running costs of the school.

If you wish to find out more about the school or to offer support please contact us via this page before the account closes.

    Why we used crowd sourcing

Educational resources for children with visual impairments are specialised and expensive. Provision in the UK is variable; in Uganda it is even poorer, especially in primary schools.

We visited CEVIC school (Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/cevic.uganda) for blind children in Kampala, Uganda at Easter 2018 and we took about 60kg of special equipment and resources, including 4 Perkins braille typewriters. Although apparently rather crude and old fashioned, these are still the best way for blind children to develop their literacy through braille in any country. We have since sent another 11 Perkins braillers.

Many of the things we took are toys that enable blind children to join in games, such as rounders or football (balls with marbles or bells in them) and to develop their tactile sense and fine motor skills, which are essential precursors to learning braille. We have also sent some musical instruments because music can play a large part in everybody's life, both educationally and socially. We have sent around 50 cartons of SEB braille books that were kindly donated by professional colleagues and contacts around the UK.

On behalf of the children and teachers at CEVIC, thank you once again for your support. Vernon & Linda
