Story

In December 2015 Storm Desmond devastated our community, homes and businesses were flooded, infrastructure destroyed and farm animals drowned.

We set up this not for profit community interest company to plant trees and hedgerows, repair degraded soils and build a more flood resilient catchment by restoring our streams and rivers.

By planting hedgerows we can benefit our wildlife by giving them shelter and food, as well as creating a network of wildlife corridors that link up our patchwork of wonderful habitats. The hedges provide excellent shelter for farm animals to hide behind in bad weather, the leaves help to create better soil and sequester carbon and the blossom in spring provides an essential food source for Bee's and insects

We are also working with The Environment Agency to help repair and restore our watercourses. By restoring natural processes to our rivers, such as allowing them to connect to there floodplains then we can help flooding downstream by slowing the flow of water by storing it temporarily in the uplands.

It costs £4 to plant an Oak tree with a tree shelter and from £10 per meter to erect a stock proof fence and plant a new hedge row.

A new wildlife pond costs from £600 depending on its size and location

Creating a species rich meadow costs between one to £2000 per acre, these are amazing for Butterflies and Bees.

By splitting up larger fields with fences and hedges we can support regenerative agriculture by rotating stock more frequently which gives the ground 'rest' periods. This helps to improve the health of the soil , which then aids with water infiltration which helps mitigate not just floods, but drought. The benefits of this system are vastly reduced inputs of nutrients, which save the farm money and help to prevent run off into water courses

It costs £130 to build 'in field' tree cages. These are a great way of introducing trees and habitat into grazed fields. Each cage has a single specimen tree, such as an Oak, planted centrally and then surrounded by Hawthorns . This is great for our bird life and insects. The soil is also improved by the tree roots and leaves

We are a not for profit and all of our work is done by local people. Any money always stays in our area and helps to support local businesses. We find that this way the work is done at a reasonable cost and instills a sense of pride in the work locally.
