Story

We are raising money to support the members’ hardship fund of the University and College Union branch at University of Nottingham. We are facing the need to take significant Industrial Action as ongoing job losses continue, with many staff still facing Compulsory Redundancy. Many hundreds of staff have already left.

As our Alternative Finance Strategy 2.0 makes clear, we believe these job losses are occurring due to the choices of university senior management and Vice Chancellors. These include the ‘vanity project’ purchase of the Castle Meadow site in 2021 which remains unused by UoN. We put forward a comprehensive counter proposal addressing Phase One of Future Nottingham phase when sent 3900+ Administrative Professional and Managerial staff Notice of risk of Compulsory Redundancy in April 2025. This has created incredible uncertainty and distress across the University.

Some numbers:

293 staff exiting via MARS between summer 2024 and January 2025

351 staff exiting via VR between July and October 2025 in the wake of the threats of Compulsory Redundancy

275 staff remaining at Risk of Compulsory Redundancy with nearly 70 in pools where there are more people than posts and thus will face a selection process for any alternative role.

We plan to raise £10,000 to help support our members to fight these ongoing job losses. We already know that Future Nottingham Phase 2 will be looking to cut academic teaching and research staff, likely whole programmes of study. To help manage the financial consequences of taking Industrial Action, please donate to support our hardship fund.
